I'd like to see some input on this topic as well.  My son just ressurected our old computer for the purpose of doing some recording for an internet band he's part of.  It's a Pentuim II @ 300mhz. with some plain generic sound card at present.  He's working with a program, "Adobe Audition", which seems to cover the basics for now but probably not too much more.  It was free to download anyway so you can't argue with that.  Any ideas on where to go from here would be great.  Hardware, software ect.?

Long time since this post was visited but I finally have a system that I think will work for me although it wasn't cheap.  I ended up going down to Central Computer in Santa Clara and hooked up with a very helpful guy there, Masa, who happens to be the best friend of my guitar hero Dave Meniketti.  He set me up with a system similar to one of Dave's; one of their DAW's, (Digital Audio Workstation) which is really a computer built with two hard drives and ultra quiet.  Here's a link.  http://www.centralcomputer.com/PriceList/ProAudio/Systems-v.htm
along with a really good sound card also.  http://www.centralcomputer.com/emerchant/itemdetail.asp?item=AUDMAUOMN02R

For software, I played around with "Adobe Audition" for a while but ended up recently purchasing Stienberg's "Cubase SL" along with "Groove Agent", a virtual drum program.  I haven't yet learned how to use the drums yet but I've started several projects in Cubase and already see that it's an exceptional program.

Sounds like you got quite the system there!

I've been dabling(sp?) with Cool Edit Pro for a bit now and really like it.  I would use Pro Tools, but quite expensive.

I'll have to check out Adobe Audition.  It is actually Cool Edit Pro!  Adobe bought the technology assets from Syntrillium Software who developed C.E.P. in 2003!  I didn't know it was out yet.

Hope to see/hear some of the projects you make.  Maybe you could post them here?

I've thought of posting some of the finished work but don't know how or where.  Terry mentioned a web-site once a while back that would host files like that but I don't have the link any more.  Perhaps you may know of one?

Hey Steve,

That site is http://www.guitars101.com

At the time I brought it up...it was free.
They started charging for space cause it became hugely popular.
I think I may have some free space on there...I'll check.

Good luck with your home recording projects.
If ya need some guitar work...lemme know Wink

It's been quite a while now since this thread has been visited I see but as for me, I've accomplished quite a lot with my recording system.  Since my last post, I've learned to use Groove Agent and it's a really great program.  There are many fine tuning options that make my recordings sound like there's a really drummer in my house.  And with Cubase, I've worked on recordings with up to 32 tracks and have really learned a lot of this program's capabilities.
I also have purchased Steinberg's Wavelab 5 mastering software package and have taken many steps towards making my chincy little efforts sound almost like the music you can buy in the stores.  (Probably better than some), but not nearly as good as I'm sure this equipment is capable.  I've got a long way to go but this sure is working out to be a real blast.  I even submitted some of my work in a local radio station contest for cover bands at the suggestion of a friend.  Didn't make it to the finals but it was a fun thought.
Terry has been over a few times and laid down some of his amazing scorching solo work on top of some MP3 backing tracks.  Three tunes we've done so far have come out really good just as rough mixes I must say.  However, I've really improved them over the last few weeks by cleaning up the backing tracks, remixing them and mastering them in Wavelab.  Terry, give me a call and I'll burn you a CD of these finished versions.  I think you'll be quite pleased.
Thats all for now.  Over and out...

Re: Computers - FREEWARE SOUDN PROGRAM

For a good FREEware sound program that runs on many platforms try Audacity:
  http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Be sure to take a look through the Tutorial.

This thing hand;es multi-track recording. I've just begun to play with it a little myself and it looks like it may fir the bill for playing around with recording my kid's garage band.
